When we say 'gourmet' what do we mean?
We have all had a “gourmet” meal or been to a “gourmet” restaurant. Most of us go out for a gourmet meal a few times a year on special occasions, like an anniversary or birthday. We choose the restaurant for the beautiful decor, elaborate meal, and superb service.
The term 'Gourmet' is defined as “relating to or being of high quality, expensive, or expensive food requiring elaborate or expert preparation.”
Dishes that come to mind when hearing gourmet are Lobster Consomme or a Pan Seared Foie Gras, maybe something finished with a quail egg or Demi Glace.
Nowadays, gourmet food can be found everywhere. What used to be “fast food” is now gourmet. Hamburgers made with Wagyu beef and fries tossed with Truffle oil. Gourmet has become global, finding it in street food and food carts with Barbacoa tacos made with grass fed beef and Vietnamese Pho .
It can be fun to prepare a gourmet meal, but time consuming and usually expensive. Some may be intimidated by trying to prepare a gourmet meal. Now markets like Whole Foods have made gourmet foods accessible. You can now make that Duck Confit you saw on the food network. So, give it a shot and make that gourmet meal you've always wanted too.
