County Fairs - Can you go and stay within your diet plan?

I took on a challenge to see if one can eat healthier and make better choices at the local county Fair. Now I know when you hear the word fair, it doesn't scream the word health...but there are better options to try and get you through your fun filled day. One of my favorite activities is to see the award-winning California wines, homemade goods as well as homegrown produce.
As I walked through the Culinary exhibit, I was pleasantly surprised to see the fair has kept abreast of diet trends. The teaching of nature's little miracle: "Aquafaba" the Very Cool,Veganalternative to eggs for use in savory or baking recipes. Including a recipe for meringue cookies.

Continuing my walk through the exhibit, I came upon EVOO Foods, a producer of beautiful olive oils, caterer and food truck from Irvine, Ca. They offered tastings of Caprese Crostini Bites as well as a Vegan Chickpea Taco, using their olive oils. I tried the Vegan Chickpea Taco and it was just what the doctor ordered. Fresh flavors of smoky chickpeas chopped giardiniera veggies, Pico de Gallo and pickled red cabbage in a soft corn tortilla. Perfect Plant Protein! Nice, light and hit the spot on a hot summer day!

Leaving the Culinary Exhibit and out into the great fair unknown, I ran into a fruit smoothie booth. Though this sounded absolutely refreshing in the heat, I realized these were not made from completely whole fruit. Watch out for the added sugars. Opt for the beautiful, summer berries and dark chocolate dipped fruits at Terri's Berries.

Looking for something a little more filling? Check out all of the grilled offerings: Kabobs, Corn on the cob, even turkey leg tacos! Lots of lean protein and fresh vegetables to keep you on your everyday diet and not weigh you down. Ex Deep Fried Cheeseburgers...believe me, the aftermath isn't pretty.

Just keep these tips in mind and you'll be ready for the next fair coming to your town.

Upcoming County Fairs:

Will keep this in mind for the Oktoberfests, holiday boo-tiques and fall balls coming up as well. There's always an alternative 😊
